Our inaugural podcast! We introduce ourselves a bit and go over the top 7 games that we played during our early years, which helped to shape our gamer sensibilities. Send any comments to roll2d6@gmail.com.
[Update: Welcome to our new listeners who decided to go back and start with the first episode. You should know that while the sound quality is pretty bad in this first episode, it went up dramatically for the second episode after we got better recording equipment. Thanks for checking out the podcast.]
Ah, these lists really take me back to elementary school. Except for Risk, which I played in college. One of my friends would always hole up in Australia…
Excellent podcast!
Hehe, really enjoyed the part about Bloodbowl. I had something like 13 teams, but ended up giving about 12 of them to Hoffmangler. ((Keeping only the skaven that I really loved)).
I’d kill for a good game of Bloodbowl. =P
Hey, guys, great show!
I’ll tell you, it broke my heart to hear that you only got to play Champions twice! Like you, I’d memorized the rules and would even create characters using nothing more that a pencil, paper, and maybe a calculator, but I was fortunate enough to have a lot of faithful, dedicated players who loved their characters and the game itself. I’ve played some great Champions and lots of great spinoffs, like Danger International, Fantasy Hero, and Justice, Inc. My other favorite old RPGs were Top Secret (was I ever so young?) and Call of Cthulhu.
Oh, and speaking of Call of Cthulhu, I had a similar experience with that game to the one you had when you ran Vampire. After a spooky, candle-lit session of exploration into the horrors of Lovecraft’s universe one warm summer evening back in 1989, one of my players went home and spent a restless night alone, haunted by the whispering of the wind in the trees outside. He told me of it the next day, marveling that a roleplaying game could do that to him. He was hooked, all right.
I’m looking forward to episode 2!
Adam & Nate…
Excellent podcast! I’m listening to it right now, and am about halfway through. You guys seem to really be enjoying yourselves and it translates well in the ‘cast. I must say though, 45 mins is a bit long. While you retain my attention, the sheer length of it is a bit overwhelming.
That said, keep up the excellent work!
Guy great podcast!.
Loved the lists, had a few of my top 7 in there, Car wars, bloodbowl, risk, D&D…
I think 45 minutes is just fine, lord knows there plenty to talk about when it comes to games!
You guys mentioned you dont play RPGs anymore, what games are you gusy into atm?

Re: podcast length
We’re of 2 minds on this issue. We want to have a couple of segments each ‘cast (for variety), but we don’t want them to be without substance or discussion. We’re still trying to figure out the fine balance between time-enough and too-much-time. Hopefully, by splitting up the cast into obvious segments, the people who only want to listen for 20 min or so will be able to pause, and come back to the other segment(s) later.
Re: what we play now
Recently I’ve been really into wargaming, hex-based or otherwise. We recently found a new game called BattleStations! http://www.battlestations.info/ which we’ve played a bunch recently. Well, like I said, we’ll be talking about our current gaming as well.
This is one of the things we’re going to discuss in upcoming ‘casts.
Thanks for listening! We really appreciate the feedback.

Freaking awesome…geeze I think I played or know of all the games you mentioned. I think I still have all my carwars stuff eheh. I play warhammer 40k mostly now… but starting to dream of RPGs again eheh. Keep it up… can hardly wait for mroe!

Finally got around to listening to this. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Before I listened to your lists, I paused and wrote down my seven. Here there are, in no particular order: AD&D, Top Secret/S.I., DC Heroes (Mayfair), Star Wars (West End), Blood Bowl, Boot Hill, and Paranoia.
I liked this podcast so much, I immediately listened to the others. And now I’m itching to do some gaming again.
I hope word spreads of your podcast (I’ll do my part).
Ed
Your podcast seems to confuse the hell out of my MP3 player. It seems to be confused as to how far through the show it is. It doesn’t do it with the other 20 or so podcasts I listen to.
Not sure why, and not sure how you should fix it (maybe reduce the bit rate – 96 is very high for voice?)…
I don’t know why you should be having any problem with the MP3 files … they’re standard 64 Kbit/s VBR MP3 files (not 96), with a 22 KHz sample rate and ID3v2.2 tags. Maybe your MP3 player has a problem with variable bit-rate MP3s? The podcasts work fine on my iPod.
–Adam
Maybe it is because it is variable rate. That might explain it.
It is very odd. Other podcasts aren’t affected…
The problem seems to be that the MP3 player (and some of my Windows XP boxes) seem convinced the show is 12 minutes, 57 seconds long.
I have got around it by converting the shows to a new bitrate and then it identifies the correct length.
Very odd.
Otherwise – great show. Keep up the good work.
Converting the bitrate – HOW DO YOU DO THAT???? Please please please please tell me – I’m having trouble getting ALL of the podcasts I download to play on my cheap Japanese mp2player because they are less than 64 kbps.
